In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
Now the earth was 1:2 Or possibly ((became)) formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. And God said, <<Let there be light,>> and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light <<day,>> and the darkness he called <<night.>> And there was evening, and there was morning--the first day. And God said, <<Let there be an expanse between the waters to separate water from water.>> 1:7 神就造出空氣,將空氣以下的水、空氣以上的水分開了。 So God made the expanse and separated the water under the expanse from the water above it. And it was so. 1:8 神稱空氣為天。 God called the expanse <<sky.>> And there was evening, and there was morning--the second day. And God said, <<Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.>> And it was so. 1:10 神稱旱地為地,稱水的聚處為海。 God called the dry ground <<land,>> and the gathered waters he called <<seas.>> And God saw that it was good. Then God said, <<Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.>> And it was so. 1:12 於是地發生了青草和結種子的菜蔬,各從其類;並結果子的樹木,各從其類;果子都包著核。 The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening, and there was morning--the third day. And God said, <<Let there be lights in the expanse of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark seasons and days and years, 1:15 並要發光在天空,普照在地上。 and let them be lights in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth.>> And it was so. 1:16 於是神造了兩個大光,大的管晝,小的管夜,又造眾星, God made two great lights--the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. God set them in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth, 1:18 管理晝夜,分別明暗。 to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. And there was evening, and there was morning--the fourth day. And God said, <<Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky.>> 1:21 神就造出大魚和水中所滋生各樣有生命的動物,各從其類;又造出各樣飛鳥,各從其類。 So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living and moving thing with which the water teems, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. God blessed them and said, <<Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth.>> 1:23 有晚上,有早晨,是第五日。 And there was evening, and there was morning--the fifth day. And God said, <<Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: livestock, creatures that move along the ground, and wild animals, each according to its kind.>> And it was so. 1:25 於是神造出野獸,各從其類;牲畜,各從其類;地上一切昆蟲,各從其類。 God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good. Then God said, <<Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, 1:26 Hebrew; Syriac ((all the wild animals)) and over all the creatures that move along the ground.>> 1:27 神就照著自己的形像造人,乃是照著他的形像造男造女。 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. God blessed them and said to them, <<Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground.>> 1:29 神說:看那,我將遍地上一切結種子的菜蔬和一切樹上所結有核的果子全賜給你們作食物。 Then God said, <<I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground--everything that has the breath of life in it--I give every green plant for food.>> And it was so. 1:31 神看著一切所造的都甚好。 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.

September 16 "Hide thyself by the brook Cherith." (1 Kings 17:3.) GOD'S servants must be taught the value of the hidden life. The man who is to take a high place before his fellows must take a low place before his God. We must not be surprised if sometimes our Father says: "There, child, thou hast had enough of this hurry, and publicity, and excitement; get thee hence, and hide thyself by the brook─hide thyself in the Cherith of the sick chamber, or in the Cherith of bereavement, or in some solitude from which the crowds have ebbed away." Happy is he who can reply, "This Thy will is also mine; I flee unto Thee to hide me. Hide me in the secret of Thy tabernacle, and beneath the covert of Thy wings!" Every saintly soul that would wield great power with men must win it in some hidden Cherith. The acquisition of spiritual power is impossible, unless we can hide ourselves from men and from ourselves in some deep gorge where we may absorb the power of the eternal God; as vegetation through long ages absorbed these qualities of sunshine, which it now gives back through burning coal. Bishop Andrews had his Cherith, in which he spent five hours every day in prayer and devotion. John Welsh had it─who thought the day ill spent which did not witness eight or ten hours of closet communion. David Brainerd had it in the woods of North America. Christmas Evans had it in his long and lonely journeys amid the hills of Wales. Or, passing back to the blessed age from which we date the centuries: Patmos, the seclusion of the Roman prisons, the Arabian desert, the hills and vales of Palestine, are forever memorable as the Cheriths of those who have made our modern world. Our Lord found His Cherith at Nazareth, and in the wilderness of Judea; amid the olives of Bethany, and the solitude of Gadara. None of us, therefore, can dispense with some Cherith where the sounds of human voices are exchanged for the waters of quietness which are fed from the throne; and where we may taste the sweets and imbibe the power of a life hidden with Christ. ─Elijah, by Meyer.
